Sclerotherapy involves injecting a “sclerosant” into spider veins that commonly appear about the knees, thighs, and even ankles. This is an office procedure that Dr. Boynton commonly performs. The injections typically cause very little discomfort and can eradicate these spider veins, but in most cases it has to be done over several sessions. Dr. Boynton commonly treats spider veins on the legs as well as prominent veins on the backs of the hands and chest. Sclerotherapy remains the treatment of choice to eradicate most superficial leg veins, however a special technique called foam sclerotherapy may be used to increase the clearance rate of larger vessels. Very tiny veins may need to be treated with lasers or even hyfrecation (especially around the base of the nose) or a combination of lasers and sclerotherapy. Dr. Boynton utilize multiple injection techniques (including both standard and foam sclerotherapy) as well as a variety of solutions including STS (sodium tetradecyl sulfate) , glycerin, and hypertonic saline to get the best possible results in each individual patient.
