What Exactly Is A Mommy Makeover?
“Mommy makeover” is a common term that generally refers to rejuvenation of the breasts and body in one surgery. The procedure gets its name because it is often requested by mothers who wish to reverse the physical effects of pregnancy, birth, and child-rearing. I have seen moms come in fairly soon after their delivery, as well as others who wait some time. In my professional opinion, it is best to wait at least six months after the cessation of breast feeding – should the mother breastfeed – due to the “settling” changes in the breasts that need to stabilize. Also, I would encourage mothers to return to their pre-pregnancy weight and normal fitness routines before considering the surgery.
A mommy makeover typically involves some form of breast enhancement with a silicone gel implant because of its more natural-looking appearance and increased durability over time. In certain instances, however, patients may need more than just implants to achieve the look they desire for their breasts. For example, if their breasts are drooping and need to be lifted as well, a breast lift with the insertion of an implant can be performed at the same time. Additionally, there are some moms who have larger breasts that need uplifting and sometimes even a breast reduction. This can also be performed simultaneously during a mommy makeover.
In regard to the torso or abdominal region, a tummy tuck is often performed to help restore pre-pregnancy contour. This helps “rejuvenate” the midsection through means of tightening abdominal muscles, removing loose skin, and more. Furthermore, every mommy makeover includes some component of liposuction, typically performed around the flanks or hips/waist, the arms and/or armpits, and the thighs.
Ultimately, a mommy makeover is a comprehensive surgical rejuvenation that can be customized to help mothers restore their pre-pregnancy physiques, often in the convenience of one single visit.
